Atkins Diet Review - Weight Loss Resources. By Dietitian, Juliette Kellow BSc RDUnless you’ve been living on Mars, chances are you’ve heard of the Atkins diet – and probably know someone who’s tried it, if you haven’t done so yourself. After all, it’s a diet that sounds too good to be true. To shift those pounds quickly you simply need to start the day with bacon and eggs, snack on chunks of cheese, top coffee with cream and feast on steaks fried in butter. Not exactly the typical foods you’d find on the shopping lists of most slimmers who’ve grown up with the idea that a low- fat diet is the best way to lose weight. But like all things that sound too good to be true, there’s a catch. And in the case of the Atkin’s diet, it means that filling up on high- fat foods needs to be balanced by giving up most carbs including bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, chocolate, crisps, biscuits, cake – even fruit, milk and some veg in the early stages. Nevertheless, the Atkin’s diet has captured the hearts – and tastebuds – of everyone from A- list celebs such as Jennifer Aniston and Renee Zellweger to business men, teachers and housewives. In fact, at its peak in late 2. Brits were estimated to have tried the diet in an effort to shape up and slim down. In spite of this, the Atkins Diet has caused the biggest weight loss debate in years, generating almost as many column inches as advocates of the diet have claimed to lose from their waistline. And even today, nutrition experts have still not been won over. Dr Atkins' theory is really quite simple: when you cut out carbs, your body is forced into burning its fat stores to provide it with energy; as you burn more calories when your body burns fat compared with carbohydrate, you'll lose weight more quickly; by cutting out carbs, blood sugar levels remain more stable throughout the day, and so prevent overeating. How does the Atkins Diet work? There are four phases to the Atkins diet. The first phase is called Induction, which must be followed for at least two weeks, although this phase can be continued for much longer if you can bear it! During Induction, you must severely limit your intake of carbohydrate to a tiny 2. As well as avoiding carb- rich treats such as biscuits, cakes, chocolate, crisps, fizzy drinks, croissants and pastry, this also means ditching bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, milk, fruit and most veg from the menu. In contrast, you can eat unlimited amounts of red meat, chicken, fish, cheese, eggs, mayo, cream and butter. It’s during the Induction phase that your body switches from burning carbs to burning fat and blood sugar levels stabilise. The second phase, known as Ongoing Weight Loss, allows you to slightly increase your carb intake – by 5g daily for a week at a time – until you find your Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing Weight. This is the maximum amount of carbohydrate you can eat each day to lose between 1 and 3lb a week. For some people, this may only be 2. Nevertheless, it’s still considerably lower than most of us are used to and really only allows for the introduction of a few more veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds. Bread, potatoes, rice, pasta and breakfast cereals are still off limits! It’s time to enter phase three, called Pre- maintenance, once you have just 5- 1. During this phase, you increase you carb intake by 1. The idea is to slow down your weight loss to no more than 1lb a week in an effort to prepare your body for the final phase, weight maintenance. By now you can start to include tiny amounts of traditional starchy foods such as porridge, bread and pasta – and we are talking tiny amounts! For example, just 4. Millions of people have defeated obesity and heart disease through Dr Atkins Diet Plan. If you have tried many ongoing. The fourth and final phase, Lifetime Maintenance, aims to help you maintain your weight. While you can have a slightly more varied carbohydrate intake, most people need to limit carbs to less than 9. The result: you’ll be following a low- carb diet for life. So how much weight can I expect to lose? Dr Atkins claims you can expect to lose 6- 1. Induction, which should slow to 1- 3lb a week once you enter the Ongoing Weight Loss Phase. During Pre- maintenance, you can expect to lose 1lb a week at most. I keep hearing about . What are these? Not all carbohydrates can be digested by the body. Fibre, for example, passes through the body without affecting blood sugar levels. The Atkins diet focuses on those carbohydrates that can be digested and therefore affect blood sugar levels. The . In the UK, this is equivalent to the carbohydrate content given in the nutrition information chart on food packaging. I’ve noticed there are loads of low- carb products available. Should I try them? The availability of low- carb products has grown tremendously in the past few years and you can now buy everything from low- carb pasta, soups and bread to tomato ketchup, shakes and chocolate. If you decide to follow a low- carb diet such as the Atkins plan, these can add variety to your diet. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that these products can be expensive and many add few other nutrients to your diet. They are also often higher in fat and/or calories than the standard product, making them a less suitable option if you’re trying to lose weight by a more balanced method such as counting calories. Does the Atkins diet have any side effects? Unpleasant side effects can occur with the Atkins diet. To start with, burning fat results in the production of substances called ketones as your body enters a state called ketosis. This can result in bad breath, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, insomnia and nausea. Constipation may also occur as a consequence of avoiding typically high- fibre foods such as fruit, veg, beans, wholewheat pasta, brown rice, wholegrain breakfast cereals and jacket potatoes. When it comes to long- term side effects, many health professionals are concerned that the Atkins diet may have serious dangers. While the high intake of fat, particularly saturates, may increase the risk of heart disease, there are also concerns that the unbalanced nature of the Atkins diet may lead to nutritional deficiencies, which cause health problems in later life. For example, poor intakes of bone- building calcium (found in dairy products) may increase the risk of osteoporosis, while poor intakes of antioxidant nutrients (found in fruit and veg) have been linked with a host of health problems ranging from heart disease and cancer to premature ageing and cataracts. Some experts are also worried that high intakes of protein may cause kidney problems or weaken bones. Are there any other bad points? Because so many foods are off limits, the diet can get very boring with the result that many people give up after a short while. It’s also almost impossible to follow the Atkin’s plan if you’re a vegetarian as nuts, seeds, beans and many vegetables are banned in the early stages. Most experts also believe the Atkins plan fails to teach people about the basic principles of a balanced, healthy diet, which science irrefutably proves can help keep us healthy and free from disease. Any pros? The main positive is that people can lose considerable amounts of weight, really quite quickly and this can be very motivating. The diet also encourages people to cut out most processed carbs and alcohol. Thanks to it allowing plenty of red meat and high- fat butter, cream, cheese and mayo, it’s also the one diet that’s got men talking about the need to lose weight. In many cases, this talk has turned into action, with many men following the Atkins diet in an effort to lose their beer bellies! What do the experts say? The scientific jury’s still out on whether low- carb diets really do burn fat and most experts agree more research is needed to identify the long- term health risks and benefits. The Atkins Diet certainly flies in the face of healthy eating guidelines, which recommend less fat and more fruit, veg and high- fibre carbs. Nutrition experts are particularly worried that the diet may increase the risk of heart disease as it’s potentially very high in fat, especially saturates. Not even revised guidelines for fat intakes from Atkins Nutritionals – the company set up by the late Dr Robert Atkins to sell his products and promote the diet – have helped qualm most health professional’s fears. While the company recommended that no more than 2. Most experts also worry about the dangers of encouraging people to eat less fruit and veg – there’s overwhelming evidence that these foods can protect us from a host of diseases including cancer. Is the diet still as popular as it once was? It seems more of us are starting to serve spaghetti with our Bolognese, roast potatoes with our Sunday lunch and rice with our curries. According to new research, the popularity of the Atkins diet has taken a massive dive in America. The latest figures revealed that in January 2. US were following the diet, but by November 2. Meanwhile, if book sales are anything to go by, it looks like the same is happening in Britain. In December 2. 00. Dr Atkins infamous diet book were just one tenth of those a year ago, when hopeful slimmers bought more than 1. Numerous health scares reported in the press have appeared to turn many people against the Atkins regime and at last we’re beginning to take notice of the concerns of nutrition experts. Revelations that Dr Atkins was obese and suffering from heart problems at the time of his death have done little to help the low- carb cause, even though it was later claimed that these problems were the result of medical treatment. Even at the height of its popularity, a Weight Loss Resources poll in October 2. Department of Health about any potential problems linked to the Atkins Diet. Now it seems, the diet will lose many of its fans before official guidelines can be developed! Juliette’s verdict. From a practical point of view, while fried eggs and bacon for breakfast every day may initially sound tempting, most people will be left craving a piece of toast and a banana within a few days.

Fad Diets You Should Absolutely Never Try. By K. Aleisha Fetters. Every day it seems a new diet is ready to make weight loss faster and easier than ever before. Or at least they say they are. The following diets might spur short- term weight loss, but many are difficult to follow, have arbitrary rules, and a few could put your health in danger. Raw foodies say cooking destroys nutrients. Though it's true that cooking produce can sometimes reduce nutrient levels, cooked veggies still pack plenty of fiber, vitamins and minerals, and in some instances cooking actually enhances nutrients while also killing bacteria.
The biggest issue with this extreme form of veganism? Food prep - - it's totally impractical, says Christopher N. Ochner, Ph. D., director of research development and administration at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center. Raw foodies spend hours upon hours juicing, blending, dehydrating, sprouting, germinating, cutting, chopping and rehydrating. The diet certainly has positive points; it's heavy on fresh produce and other healthy, satisfying foods while eliminating processed fare, which in itself may spur weight loss. But your body is incredibly efficient at keeping your p. H levels where they need to be, so cutting out these foods really won't affect your body's p. H, says Ochner. Not to mention there's no research proving that p. H affects your weight in the first place. The bottom line: The diet is strict, complicated and bans foods that can have a place in a healthy eating plan, such as meat, dairy and alcohol. For example, on the diet, those with type O blood are to eat lean meats, vegetables and fruits, and avoid wheat and dairy. Meanwhile, type A dieters go vegetarian, and those with type B blood are supposed to avoid chicken, corn, wheat, tomatoes, peanuts and sesame seeds. However, there's no scientific proof that your blood type affects weight loss. And depending on your blood type, the diet can be extremely restrictive. Its quick- fix version involves a day of fasting allowing only water and juice during a full or new moon - - and supposedly losing up to six pounds in water weight in a single day. The extended version starts with that daylong fast and continues with specific eating plans for each phase of the moon. Sepsis refers to a bacterial infection in the bloodstream or body tissues. This is a very broad term covering the presence of many types of. MSN Health and Fitness has fitness, nutrition and medical information for men and women that will help you get active, eat right and improve your overall wellbeing. The heart is a pump designed to force blood through our body. Blood is pumped from the heart through the arteries out to our muscles and organs. The Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) for different nutrients were developed on Western diets, and therefore, high-carb diets. Given that a ketogenic metabolism uses. While you'll lose some weight from not eating, it has nothing to do with the moon, and it will come right back, Ochner says. Siegal's Cookie Diet, The Hollywood Cookie Diet and the Smart for Life Cookie Diet all promise that eating cookies will help you drop pounds. Of course, you don't get to chow down chocolate- chip cookies - - you eat about 5. Then you eat a normal dinner, for a total of 1,0. If you stick to the diet, you will likely lose some weight, but by depriving yourself all day, you set yourself up for bingeing come dinnertime, Ochner says. On this diet, developed by obesity doctor Alwin Lewis, M. D., you skip breakfast and eat only five bites of food for lunch and five more for dinner. Pretty much all involve subsisting for days on only lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper mixed in water. Common side effects include fatigue, nausea, dizziness and dehydration. Plus, on an extremely low- calorie diet like this one, you are going to lose muscle, exactly the kind of weight you don't want to lose, Caspero says. Dieters replace breakfast and lunch with about 1. It's easy to get too few calories for your body to run its best, Ochner says. Besides, who really wants to take jars of baby food to work each day? In the short term, it does yield weight loss. It can also promote bloating and gas from all the cabbage and is lacking in protein, which is needed to preserve lean body mass. While I am a fan of nutrient- dense, low- calorie foods for weight loss, it should be balanced with other foods such as fruits, carbohydrates, healthy fats and lean protein. And this diet definitely hits that, limiting dieters to 8. Some iterations also prohibit eating extremely hot or extremely cold foods, preparing foods in aluminum pans, and requires dieters to space . Rumored to have been followed by Elvis Presley, this diet takes that simple fact to the extreme, encouraging people to use sedatives to stay asleep for days on end. But sleeping the days away not only starves the body and causes muscle deterioration from a lack of movement, but actually risks death: . However, there's no evidence that HCG does more than act as a placebo, Ochner says. Yes, you'll lose weight, but only due to the extreme calorie restriction. Though a health care provider may legally give you HCG injections, they're typically used to treat fertility issues in women and the FDA has not approved them for weight loss. As for over- the- counter homeopathic products that supposedly contain HCG? But apparently, some people do. This weight- loss tactic has been around for decades, preying on especially desperate dieters. Here's how it goes: Ingest tapeworm eggs, let the tapeworm eat the food you consume once it gets to your intestines, and then, when you lose enough weight, get a doctor to prescribe you an anti- worm medication. But some tapeworm eggs can migrate to various parts of your body or cause other potentially life- threatening problems. Not only does consuming cotton balls in place of food deprive the body of nutrients, eating anything that isn't actually food can cause blockages in your intestines. What's more, most cotton balls aren't even made of cotton - - they're composed of bleached, synthetic fibers. Cushing syndrome Overview - Mayo Clinic. Cushing syndrome occurs when your body is exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol for a long time. Cushing syndrome, sometimes called hypercortisolism, may be caused by the use of oral corticosteroid medication. Kidney disease is the ninth leading cause of death in the. Kidney disease amongst diabetics is commonly called diabetic nephropathy. Statistically, around 40% of people with diabetes develop nephropathy but it is possible. The condition can also occur when your body makes too much cortisol on its own. Too much cortisol can produce some of the hallmark signs of Cushing syndrome — a fatty hump between your shoulders, a rounded face, and pink or purple stretch marks on your skin. Cushing syndrome can also result in high blood pressure, bone loss and, on occasion, type 2 diabetes. Treatments for Cushing syndrome can return your body's cortisol production to normal and noticeably improve your symptoms. The earlier treatment begins, the better your chances for recovery. Two of a Kind — Research Connects Celiac and Thyroid Diseases and Suggests a Gluten- Free Diet Benefits Both. By Cheryl Harris, MPH, RD, and Gary Kaplan, DOToday’s Dietitian. Vol. 5. 2Nature doesn’t always play fairly. Anyone with an autoimmune condition is predisposed to developing other autoimmune conditions, and there is a particularly strong connection between celiac disease and autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD), which includes Hashimoto’s and Graves’ diseases. Despite this connection, routine cross- screening is rare. Since these conditions frequently lead to significant changes in weight, RDs are in a prime position to spot common symptoms and provide clients with potentially lifesaving referrals for further testing and diagnosis. This article will review the overlapping symptoms, examine the current research on the relationship between these diseases, explore how a gluten- free diet affects both conditions, and describe the ways in which RDs can most effectively support their clients and patients. Understanding the connection between celiac disease and thyroid disease can help dietitians design strategies for appropriate dietary management and support. Background About one half of the approximately 2. Americans with celiac disease are undiagnosed. When an individual with celiac disease consumes gluten, an autoimmune process is triggered and the body attacks the villi of the small intestine, often leading to malnutrition. A similar autoimmune process occurs with ATD—except in this case, the target is the thyroid gland, producing a deficiency or excess of hormones and wreaking havoc on the body’s metabolism. Graves’ disease is a hyperthyroid autoimmune process wherein the body attacks itself and the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. Overlapping Symptoms Celiac disease is often thought of as a gastrointestinal disease, with symptoms such as diarrhea, weight loss, bloating, and abdominal pain. While these symptoms usually present in young children, estimates indicate that approximately 7. Symptoms of ATD and celiac disease often overlap, and many (eg, weight changes, fatigue) are nonspecific and incorrectly attributed to aging or depression. The increased risk holds despite treatment with a gluten- free diet or thyroid medications. In a recent study by Alessio Fasano, MD, a recognized celiac disease expert, one half of the people newly diagnosed with celiac disease also had thyroid disease. Most studies show a significant but much smaller association. The largest longitudinal study to date showed that adults with celiac disease had 4. In children, rates were higher still at 6 times and 4. While just under 1% of Americans have celiac disease, recent thyroid review studies show that an average of 4. ATD have celiac disease. Naiyer et al explored the connection between autoimmune hypothyroidism and celiac disease and hypothesized a mechanism via serum antitissue transglutaminase (t. TG) antibodies. It is well established that anti- t. TG antibodies are present in patients with active celiac disease and that they decrease and eventually disappear on a gluten- free diet. The study demonstrated that these anti- t. TG antibodies bind and react to thyroid tissue as well, which may contribute to ATD development. Antithyroid antibodies were observed more often in patients with celiac disease than in either controls or patients with another autoimmune condition (eg, Crohn’s disease). Impact of a Gluten- Free Diet As previously discussed, when individuals with celiac disease follow a gluten- free diet, their anti- t. TG levels return to normal. A growing amount of research suggests that when people with celiac disease and ATD adopt a gluten- free diet, not only do their celiac- related antibody levels improve, but their thyroid antibody levels also decrease. A 2. 01. 0 study in the Journal of Pediatrics found that 1. The Naiyer study noted that among people with celiac disease, significantly more people have thyroid antibodies before going gluten free than after (3. The study also showed a positive correlation between anti- t. TG and thyroid antibody titers in patients with active celiac disease. The only way to reduce anti- t. TG levels is to eat a gluten- free diet. These studies suggest that a gluten- free diet has the potential to improve thyroid function by reducing autoimmune reactions in the body. According to Mary Shomon, a nationally known thyroid advocate and author of The New York Times bestselling book The Thyroid Diet, “Hashimoto’s isn’t considered curable. Autoimmune diseases are usually lifelong. But for that subset of people that are triggered by underlying celiac disease or even gluten sensitivity, sometimes thyroid function goes completely back to normal. This only happens in a subset of patients, but some regain normal thyroid function and no longer need medication.”Kathie Madonna Swift, MS, RD, LDN, a dietitian at the Ultra. Wellness Center in Massachusetts, agrees: “We see a number of patients in our clinic who have . Thus, if a patient has signs and symptoms of thyroid dysfunction, gluten should be on your clinical radar screen.” Many clinicians report that eating a gluten- free diet may help improve thyroid function in nonceliac gluten intolerance. Where RDs Fit In. Balancing nutritional needs and weight can be tricky on a gluten- free diet. Many people with celiac disease gain weight because many premade gluten- free foods are higher in calories, fat, and sugar. Cynthia Kupper, RD, executive director of the Gluten Intolerance Group, advocates emphasizing from the start that clients eat healthful foods. I teach them comparisons right off the bat that many of these products will lead to weight gain. I get them onto a more naturally gluten- free diet . According to Swift, “Weight issues can be very complex and must be viewed holistically with a full complement of mind- body stress- reduction therapies, movement/physical activity guidelines, mindful eating strategies, and, of course, a whole- foods diet that is . In our practice, it is another reason why a nutritionist is on the team.” It is important for dietitians to work with clients to set appropriate weight goals and other measures of success, such as increased fiber intake, higher fruit and vegetable consumption, increased exercise, and proper laboratory measures, to keep them engaged and making progress. There are many good resources for eating a healthful gluten- free diet, including the Gluten Intolerance Group (www. Gluten- Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide by Shelley Case, RD; and The Gluten- Free Nutrition Guide by Tricia Thompson, MS, RD. Look Out for Red Flags. Since celiac disease and ATD tend to lead to weight changes and fatigue and adopting a gluten- free diet often leads to weight gain, it’s easy for patients, dietitians, and physicians to incorrectly assign blame. But if they are doing what they should be and have worked with doctors to optimize their symptoms, it’s time to look further at dietary factors like gluten or food sensitivities,” says Shomon. Another red flag is when patients take increasingly large doses of thyroid medications and fail to have the expected response. Similarly, a detailed diet and exercise diary can indicate whether increases in weight are due to eating a highly refined, calorically dense gluten- free diet or whether thyroid problems or other conditions may be contributing, too. As a general rule, when working with clients with autoimmune conditions who are continuing to experience unexplained symptoms despite the proper treatment, further testing may be warranted. Invaluable Guidance and Support RDs often get a broad look at a client’s health history and are in a unique position to see the potential links and provide guidance and support. The majority of clients seeking an RD’s services are either unintentionally gaining or losing weight. Since most people with both celiac disease and thyroid conditions are undiagnosed, referrals to a knowledgeable family physician, gastrointestinal doctor, or endocrinologist when appropriate can provide vital direction and ultimately help clients reach long- term weight and health goals. Recognizing and discussing the links between conditions and referring patients for further support and evaluation may be invaluable. Should they use it? To be honest! I would definitely have no problem using it as a moisturizer for my body, but I’ve never used it on my face. Frankly, I’m too scared to try it. While many people love using coconut oil topically, I’ve also heard many a time that it’s very comedogenic (meaning that it clogs your pores). On a scale of one to five, with five being the most comedogenic, coconut oil is apparently a four! One of the most concrete reasons I’m too freaked out to give it a try is because of some articles that Fran from High on Health posted a while ago about her experiences with coconut oil. She wrote a post telling people that she was using coconut oil on her face and that it was going well, and that she LOVED IT! But then she later does a follow up post in which she says it triggered quite a breakout, all her pores became clogged, and it took her skin months to recover. If you are acne prone (and I assume you are if you are reading my site), I’d stay away. And don’t get me wrong. There are so many that are non- comedogenic and highly beneficial for acne, like hemp seed oil or argan oil. Check out my article on the best oils to use if you’re acne prone! However, if you are a braver soul than I and would like to give it a try anyway, absolutely make sure that you are using unrefined, organic, virgin coconut oil. Carbohydrates, and the role they play in a healthy diet, are one of the most hotly contested nutritional debates in the world, both in conventional and ancestral health circles. One one side, you’ve got folks who say that carbohydrates are nonessential and increase your risk for diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and neurological disorders. On the other side, some say that carbohydrates are crucial for good health and should make up the majority of your calories. It’s no wonder I have so many clients who come to me completely confused about carbs and whether or not they should eat more or less of them. While some people do incredibly well following a low carb Paleo diet, there are many people who crash and burn on this type of dietary plan. So, how can you tell if you’re the type of person who shouldn’t be eating a low carb diet, and how do you figure out how many carbs you should be eating? I plan to teach you just that in this article. Is your low- carb diet doing you more harm than good? Find out how many carbs YOU should be eating. Pregnancy. I recently discussed the role of carbohydrates during pregnancy in an episode of The Ancestral RDs Podcast. The most important reason why women need adequate carbohydrates during pregnancy is to ensure adequate fetal brain development and growth. Another reason is because a high protein diet can be dangerous during pregnancy, and when you cut out carbohydrate as a major macronutrient, you usually can’t help but increase protein as a percentage of calories. Protein intake greater than 2. The Institute of Medicine recommends a minimum of 1. Paul Jaminet advises pregnant mothers to restrict protein to about 1. Chris recommends a moderate carb approach for most pregnant women (except those with any type of diabetes) in his book, Your Personal Paleo Code (published in paperback as The Paleo Cure in December 2. Like these other experts, I generally recommend 3. Unless you have diabetes or a serious neurological condition that requires carbohydrate restriction, it’s not worth the risk playing around with a low carb diet when you’re pregnant, and these diets aren’t conducive to fertility for many women either. Each athlete is completely unique in their ability to perform well on a low carb diet, and there’s nothing wrong with testing out the diet to see how it affects your athletic ability. But if you’ve been trying a low carb diet for months now and your workouts are suffering, your weight isn’t budging (or maybe you’ve even gained weight!), and your recovery time is increasing, you’re probably not the type of person who can handle a low carb diet combined with regular intense physical activity. I’ve had many clients come to me on a low carb diet who, after switching to a more moderate carb approach, found that their energy and endurance significantly increased, and they were able to make quicker strength gains than before. Many also were able to shed some of the stubborn body fat that they’d been retaining despite eating a low carb diet and training hard, which was a result they didn’t expect! For my athletic clients, I usually recommend a minimum of 2. I may actually recommend more like 4. Again, each athlete is an individual and what works for one person, or even a thousand people, may not work for you. So don’t be afraid to experiment and pay attention to how your diet makes you look, feel, and perform! And don’t hesitate to get help if you need it! Hypothyroidism and HPA Axis Dysregulation (Adrenal Fatigue)Hypothyroidism is one of the most commonly cited medical reasons for needing to eat a moderate carb diet. The main reason why carbs affect thyroid function so directly is because insulin is needed for the conversion of the inactive T4 hormone into the active T3 hormone, and insulin is generally quite low on very low carbohydrate diets. So if you’ve suddenly started developing hypothyroid symptoms on your low carb diet, it’s a pretty good sign that you’d be better off upping the carbs (and getting your thyroid tested if you haven’t already!) For more about how low carb dieting affects your thyroid, listen to this great interview with Chris by Jimmy Moore. HPA axis dysregulation, also known as adrenal fatigue, is another condition where a moderate carb intake is important for general health. Kelsey and I talked about adrenal fatigue on our first Ask the RD podcast, so listen to it if you’re unfamiliar with this condition. The main hormone that gets dysregulated in adrenal fatigue is cortisol, and cortisol has been shown to increase on a low carb diet. This means that a low carb diet is a potential adrenal stressor in susceptible individuals. Combine that with a stressful job, inadequate sleep, and overexercise, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for adrenal burnout. So if you have adrenal fatigue, or if your current lifestyle is already high stress in a few different areas, you may want to increase your carb intake until you can get those additional stressors under control, as you may drive yourself into adrenal fatigue by having a chronically elevated cortisol output. Lara Briden has written a great article on the benefits of whole food carbohydrates in lowering cortisol and raising GABA, a calming hormone that is often low in adrenal fatigue patients. If you’re experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism or adrenal fatigue, you may be worsening them with a well- intentioned low carb Paleo diet. I recommend working with someone to help you figure out if your diet is indeed making these symptoms worse, and how to change what you eat to better support your thyroid and adrenal health. Gut Health. One of the less discussed downsides of a very low carbohydrate diet over the long run is the potential for alteration of the gut flora. Chris recently covered this issue in a podcast with Jeff Leach, where they discussed evidence that a very low carb diet can lead to gut dysbiosis and a reduction in the diversity of the gut flora. A lot of the information on this topic is new and not fully understood, but it’s reasonable to believe that when you avoid carbs, you’re also avoiding important prebiotics (i. Without them, your beneficial flora can’t produce as much gut- healing substances like butyrate and other short chain fatty acids, and your microbiome composition may even shift in an undesirable direction. And as Chris would say, you’re only as healthy as your gut is: an unhealthy gut contributes to everything from obesity and diabetes, to digestive illness, to autoimmune disease, to skin disorders. Those who are doing very low carbohydrate diets, and who simply can’t increase their starch intake for whatever reason, should use prebiotic supplements such as resistant starch- rich unmodified potato starch or FOS powder. However, these products must be incorporated slowly into your supplement regimen, as you can experience severe gas and bloating if too many prebiotics are taken all at once, or if there is existing gut dysbiosis or bacterial overgrowth. In this case, it would be wise to work with someone who can help you get the prebiotics you need while on a very low carbohydrate or ketogenic diet to protect the health of your gut microbiota. How Many Carbs Do I Need? To determine how many carbs my clients need to eat in a day to reach their health goals, first I decide what percentage of calories from carbs they’d possibly do best with. As an example from above, a woman struggling with fertility issues may benefit from a carb intake around 3. I then determine her caloric needs using a calculator like this one. If we determine that her daily needs are roughly 2. As there are 4 calories in a gram of carbohydrate, this works out to be 1. Usually I give my clients a target range to hit depending on their activity levels, and we use these targets to re- evaluate their food diaries and see if they’re hitting their goals. Most of my clients are surprised to learn how much carb- rich Paleo foods they have to eat to get up to 1. But once they start making a real effort to hit those targets, the health benefits are immediate. These benefits include weight loss, elevated mood, skin improvements, increased energy, normal menstrual function, more satisfying sleep, and more. It’s so exciting to see what a couple of starchy tubers and pieces of fruit can do for a person’s health when they simply need to eat more carbs! Wondering what foods have carbs in them, and what portion sizes you need to eat of each type to get the carbs you need? Click here for a handy list you can print out! Final Thoughts. The purpose of this article was not to bash low carb diets. I truly believe that there are many people out there who get amazing health results from a low carb plan, and there are dozens of health conditions that benefit from a very low carb or ketogenic diet, especially severe neurological conditions. Paul Jaminet has written some great posts explaining when a ketogenic diet may be useful and necessary, so I strongly suggest reading those posts if you’re still on the fence about where you stand with carbohydrates and your health needs. My hope is that by reading this article, you’ll be able to understand the many factors that play into how a person handles a low carbohydrate diet, and whether or not their health will improve on such a plan. Everyone is different in their ability to thrive on a low carbohydrate diet. If you’ve found yourself identifying with any of the issues I’ve written about in this post, you may be in need of a macronutrient adjustment in your diet. Helping people optimize their carb intake is a challenge I truly enjoy. Fitness Model Program, Fitness Diet Plan, Women Fitness Diet, Health Fitness Diet, Fitness Diet Program. The Basic Ketogenic Diet - mmmm. Note: Please note that if you are interested in a Ketogenic Diet used to treat Epilepsy or Pediatric Epilepsy, please start at Johns Hopkins who are the pioneers in this field. The wikipedia page for the Ketogenic Diet diet also has information on the diet as it relates to treating epilepsy. The diet below is simply for rapid and effective weight loss and uses a 1 to 1 fat to protein ratio rather than the 4 to 1 fat to combined protein and carbs ratio of the Ketogenic Diet pioneered by Johns Hopkins used to treat epilepsy. Disclaimer: I am neither a doctor nor self proclaimed nutrition expert so please consult your doctor before starting any diet or taking any action that affects your health and wellbeing. After finishing Gary Taubes latest book, which seems to have rapidly become the cornerstone of a new approach to nutrition, I’ve become very interested in the Ketogenic diet. The speed of weight loss I’ve seen is incredible and my energy level has remained high. The science behind a ketogenic diet is solidly backed up by Taubes research published in “Good Calories, Bad Calories” and “Why we get fat“. But the reality is that the low glycemic index diet (Low GI Diet) is effective because it is close to, but not quite, a ketogenic diet. Other diets like the South Beach Diet are also only effective because of the reduction in carbs and consequently insulin levels. The science behind this diet looks solid and it is part of the massive shift in nutrition research we’ve seen in the last few years. Prominent sport physiology experts like Tim Noakes have come around to this way of thinking and Tim in particular has said that everything he wrote about “Carboloading” in Lore of Running is wrong. If you find anything technically wrong in this article please correct me as loudly as you’d like in the comments and please cite your source. First a summary of the science behind the Ketogenic Diet. Keep in mind I’m summarizing hundreds of pages of explanation and supporting data into a few paragraphs: When you eat carbs your blood glucose level is raised and your pancreas secretes insulin. This insulin puts your muscle and fat cells into “storage mode”. Your fat cells store away the glucose as triglycerides. Insulin also prevents your fat cells from breaking down those triglycerides back into fatty acids and releasing them into your blood stream for use as energy. This is important: Insulin both causes fat absorption and prevents fat from being used as energy. If you were to eat sugary snacks throughout the day you are keeping your insulin level high which constantly keeps your fat cells in a state of absorption and prevents the release of fat and its use as energy. Eating fat and protein does very little to raise your insulin level. So the bottom line here is, if you want your body to burn fat – meaning if you want your fat cells to break down triglycerides into fatty acids, release them into your blood stream and actually use them as energy – you need to keep your insulin level as low and absolutely avoid spikes in insulin. A note on calories: Counting calories or increasing exercise output, according to the research of Taubes and many others, is a bad way to try to lose weight because what usually happens is instead of your body burning fat to make up for the deficit in calories, it simply decreases the amount of energy it expends. So you end up lethargic and still fat. There is a lot more to this, but the science above is the rationale behind all Low GI, Low Carb and Ketogenic diets. It is why you lose weight on these diets while consuming the same number of calories. The Virgin Diet (2012) is a book about losing weight by avoiding food intolerances that affect you personally. Use this page as a cheat sheet alongside the book. This is almost all name brand, but cheaper than other stores. Sonia is highly partial to the Happy Cola. Knowledge is power, after all. Low Carb and Low GI diets work because they cut out carbs that cause spikes in insulin, which you now know will cause fat absorption and prevent fat burn. The Ketogenic diet takes this one step further. It keeps your insulin level low which puts your body into fat- release- fat- burn mode, but also significantly increases the fat content in your diet and teaches your body to use fat as energy. Your body (your liver in particular) will enter a state of Ketosis and will break down fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies which will be used as energy. During the diet you can measure how much fat your body is burning by monitoring your output of acetoacetate using Ketostix. When you enter a Ketogenic state, you will see a Ketone output of 5 to 2. L (According to “Why we get fat” by Taubes and my experience). The Ketostix I have also measure blood glucose which is useful to test for Ketoacidosis which you are not at risk for unless you are diabetic. Note that Ketostix are used by diabetics to test whether they are entering a state known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis which is very dangerous. In this case they will see very high ketone levels accompanied by blood sugar levels of greater than 2. L. You should be seeing blood sugar levels of zero (according to your Ketostix) during your diet. Please note that the diet outlined below is not the “Cyclical Ketogenic Diet” used by bodybuilders. It is a basic Ketogenic diet which I’ve found to be the most effective fat burning diet available. I’ve modified this diet from the classic Ketogenic diet used to treat epilepsy which recommends a 4 to 1 ratio of protein to fat. I’ve found that I can reach a state of Ketosis with a 1 to 1 ratio of fat to protein provided I keep the carbs very low. Without further ado, the basic Ketogenic diet: What you’ll need. The Diet. Note, you can eat as much of the foods below as you like, but I’ve found that I quickly feel full eating this diet. Don’t overeat and more importantly, don’t under- eat and make sure you’re getting the calories you need to function. This is NOT about cutting calories, it’s about releasing fat reserves and teaching your body to burn them. Drink lots of water during the diet (but don’t go crazy). I find this helps increase my metal clarity and energy. Taubes and others recommend not starting an exercise program at the beginning of this diet because during the acclimatization period you will not have enough energy and it usually results in people quitting the diet. During the diet, measure your rate of fat burn by measuring your acetoacetate output with your Ketostix. Do this every time you visit the loo. You should see 5 to 2. L, and I’ve noticed it’s particularly high after a very fatty meal. Blood glucose (if your ketostix show this on a separate color tab) should be zero at all times. If it is not zero and above 2. L you may want to consult your doctor. One of the most effective tricks during a diet is routine. Eat the same meals over and over or plan your meals ahead for the whole week. I’ve found it effective to pre- make dishes on Sunday and have them ready for the week. That makes it incredibly easy to stick to the diet because I avoid thinking which means I avoid creativity and creativity requires decision making which leads to hard choices. Just avoid the hard choices and have it all planned and some of it ready to grab and go. The Leafy Green Salad recipe: This is a recipe for a basic very low carb salad with lots of flavor. It’s great to add to any high- protein, high- fat meal. Spinach, lettuce and/or mustard greens. Red peppers. Tomatoes. Optional raw onions. Optional green beans raw. Balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing with salt and pepper. Use lemon and lime very sparingly if you add it. The vinegar actually reduces the glycemic index of this salad (and other foods). Below I have outlined three days with a total of 9 meals that you can mix and match as you like. At the end I include a list of Ketogenic- safe ingredients you can add or subtract as you like. Remember the key is to have a high fat, high- protein and no- carb or very low carb diet. That means absolutely no sugar. Day 1. Breakfast: 2 eggs done any way with yolks. Sausage containing no carbs or sugar. Bacon. Lunch: Chicken with as much skin and oily gooey bits as possible. Steamed spinach or broccoli. Supper: Steak with cheese. Leafy green salad. Before bed 1 glass of wine with a slice of cheese. Day 2. Breakfast: 2 egg omlette with friend mushrooms, cheese and chopped parsley. Lunch: A whole duck breast if you can get it or chicken again with as much fatty skin as possible. Leafy green salad. Supper: Hamburger made with high fat mince without the bun. The mince can contain the usual paprika, chopped onions and garlic if you like, but absolutely no syrup or sugar. Add Cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and any other leafy low- carb greens you like. Before bed 1 glass of wine with a slice of cheese. Day 3. 2 eggs done any way with bacon and usual no- carb sausage. Steak with cheese. Leafy green salad. Salmon (or other fish) fried and served with Bok Choy and your leafy green salad. You can mix and match the meals above and get a good Ketogenic burn going where you will notice rapid weight loss. Eat as much as you want ingredient ideas: Beef,Steak,Hamburger,Prime Rib,Filet Mignon,Roast Beef,Chicken,Duck (awesome if you can get it because it is very high fat),Any Fish, Tuna, Salmon, Trout, Halibut,Lamb,Pork,Bacon,Ham,Eggs,Shrimp,Crab,Lobster,Butter,Oils (Olive Oil, Flaxseed oil, etc.),Salt, Pepper, Soy Sauce,Spinach,Lettuce,Mustard Greens,Celery,Cheeses,Oysters,Abalone. Whole grains (whole- wheat bread, brown rice, oats, bran cereal)Lean meat, poultry, and fish. Low- fat dairy products. Certain foods have been studied for their potential to prevent gallbladder problems or reduce symptoms. For example, some research has indicated that drinking caffeinated coffee lowers the risk of gallstones in both men and women. Drinking moderate amounts of alcohol has also been linked to a reduced incidence of gallstones. In one study, women who ate at least one serving of peanuts a day had a 2. However, keep in mind the evidence is far too preliminary at this time to recommend any of these foods solely for the purpose of preventing gallbladder problems.
